Baby losing weight or messed up scale?
I had my daughter to the dr about 5 days ago for really dry skin. She was weighed completely naked and she weighed 19lbs 2oz. We just returned from a wic appointment and they weighed my daughter completely clothed and she weighed 18lbs 9 ozs. I’m confused. I meant to ask the dietician about the weight difference but my daughter was crying and it completely slipped my mind. My daughter’s appetite has be pretty close to normal the last few days. She’s been eating a little less and she’s been kind of fussy but she’s teething so I expect that. It kind of concerns me that she might of lost 1/2 a lb in just a few days for no explained reason. Shouldn’t she of weighed more today seeing how she was completely clothed when they weighed her? This just doesnt seem normal. She’s had no diarreha or vomiting. Does this happen?

All babies fluctuate their weight. If your child has really dry skin she may be a little dehydrated. This could also be the source of they weight loss. I am sure if it was anything the doctors would have brought it to your attention. If she is healthy and just teething, she will not eat or drink as much. We just don’t normally weigh our kids daily or even weekly, so you probably haven’t noticed the weight change before due to this. I would weigh her again in a week. If her weight is still decreasing then call the doctor.
Providing your daughter is eating normally there shouldn’t be a problem. Maybe shes been more active, or not sleeping as well due to the teething.
First off … do ot panic! I will tell you what happened with my daughter…
I took her to be weighed one week and she had lost 2oz, I took her the next week and she had lost 4oz.. My health vistor hold me that it was a worry, but that was it. No other help no other questions from her and left me wit tons questions which had no answers. So I went to see a wonderful health vistior who is a Lactation specialist (I am breastfeeding) and she sat down with me and re-plotted her weight on a BF chart, which made her weight loss look not so drastic and it also showed that her weight was evening out. She also asked about my babys eating and she was the same as yours, she asked if she had been unwell, and like your baby she had been fine. She asked about her movements and I had told her that she had become more active.
The health visitor told me that when a baby gets to a certain age her weight gain is slower and can even lose weight due to the increased movments she will be making, but also at this stage her developmental milestones are moving, she is thinking more, using parts of her brain more, not sleeping as much and wanting to explore.
She also said that I should only weigh my baby once a month as if I did not know about her weight loss I would have not been worried as my baby was perfectly healthy and happy
She did say that f my baby was weighed at the end of the month and she still had lost weight or not put much on, we would have another chat.
As her mother you know if she looks well and is her normal self. Try not to worry about what is on the scales, go with how she looks. I think over the years we have all become obessed with weight, in adults and babies
It does happen, its normal – just keep an eye on her, if she is happy all is good
xx
Every scale is different weigh her again next week if shes active smiling an eatting i wouldnt be to concerned just yet
if it’s not on the same scale then don’t worry. they weighed and measured my son wrong at WIC every time. once they said he was 2 inches shorter than he was 2 days prior. i got home and measured him again and had him lay down made marks and used a measuring tape and it was the same as the doctors had said. They also said my friend’s son had lost 2 pounds so she freaked and the docto weighed him and he was up two pounds
Scales can be different up to 2 pounds. And consider your daughter’s bowel habits. A good BM can weigh 1/2 pound. Was the heavy weight prior to having a BM or the lower weight shortly after a BM?
Sometimes scales do differ. My daughter’s pediatrician’s scale is only like 2 oz off from the scale at WIC. (The offices are in the same building so I have weighed her on both within minutes of each other to test it). Of course they can vary a little more than that. But a baby’s weight can fluctuate depending on the last feeding, poop, pee, etc. My daughter has had some 7oz wet diapers before (i weighed her before and after taking off the diaper to see the difference). I wouldn’t worry too much. If over a 3 month period she has lost or not gained well, then that might be cause for concern. But for now, I think its fine.
