Can your weight fluctuate several pounds within a couple of hours? ?
I weighed 137 earlier today, then I took a 3-mile walk. I didn’t eat anything, and I weighed myself again. When I got back, the scale said 140! I have an old non-digital scale but it works fine – I have tested it by weighing stuff on it that I already know the weight of, like a bag of dog food. Can you "gain" three pounds in an hour or so even after exercise? Could this be from PMS?

yes. yes. yes. i can weigh 135 -140 in one day. i have fluctuated up to 7 lbs in 1 day!!!! water retention, going to the bathroom, exercise, dehydration…these things all effect your weight in a matter of hours.
Yes you definitely can! It’s probably just water weight, or something you ate that hasn’t been digested yet.
If you didn’t eat, maybe you drank water or changed your clothes or other items you were carrying with you. If you did neither of the above, the scale is broken.
Justifying this is simple: your body has whatever you put in it to start with and, although it is home to many complex chemical reactions, basic chemistry tells us that in chemical reactions mass is conserved – so chemical reactions in your body can’t make you gain or lose weight. This means you can only end up weighing more if you put stuff in you – as with eating or drinking – or on you – as with changing your clothing.
Or maybe you didn’t weigh yourself correctly the first time. For example you might have been leaning on something.
