Has anyone recently had an External Cephalic Version? The procedure where they attempt to turn the baby?
I am currently 38 weeks pregnant and the baby is still breech. I am scheduled for this procedure on Friday. I have heard that it is very uncomfortable. Has anyone had one? Define "uncomfortable" on a scale of 1-10? I know it will all be ok when I am holding my baby, but I am nervous. Does it hurt like contractions at 7/8 cm? Like getting your teeth drilled? Like a bikini wax? haha. Just wondering if there is anything to compare it to although I realize that every person is different. Thanks.

I had a version with my youngest son. I was about 38 weeks along, too. For me, it wasn’t too painful… maybe a 2. It was more uncomfortable than painful. The fact that it was a teaching hospital and that there were a ton of student doctors in a tiny room along with my mother and the 2-3 people actually doing the procedure made it all even more uncomfortable!
My version turned out fine (no pun intended!). My son was born about a week later, safe and sound and head first! During my childbirthing classes a couple of years ago (I’d never been through them and my husband was a newbie Daddy, so we thought it was a good idea) I talked about my version and was told by the lady leading the class that the procedure isn’t done much anymore. If I were you, I would feel blessed that you have found a doctor willing to attempt the procedure. I know that if I end up with another threatened breech baby, I’m going to push for the version rather than just default to a c-section.
Good luck, I’ll hope and pray that your version turns out as well as mine did!
Hi!
I had an attempted ECV back in November. It was uncomfortable, but nothing like giving birth. I used breathing and gripping my husband’s hand to deal with the pain. It is hard to give it a number on a scale, maybe sort of like getting a really bad sprain?
Unfortunately it was not successful for me. The baby would not flip. I ended up having a c-section, and a that time the doc found I had a large fibroid which prevented the baby from flipping.
I am still glad I tried the ECV. I would have rather had a vaginal birth instead of a c-section.
Good luck!
Why don’t you try the breech tilt first? Lay on your back with your pelvis higher than your head, like on pillows. Do this for 20 minutes twice a day. The baby will usually turn himself. It is much simpler and safer. It works 75% of the time.
I had one with my first child. It felt like something i cant explain. It was very uncomfortable. on a scale of 1-10 it was a 9. this was the worst thing that happened. after 3 attempts the Dr quit trying. 2 weeks later I had a c-section. That is something that i will never do again.
I had one at 36.5 weeks with my first, it was not successful after multiple attempts. The pain honestly on a scale of 1-10 it was about an 8, they tried turning him for over an hour. I ended up in Labor 2 days later and had a c-section and he was over 8lbs at just shy of 37weeks. His size has alot to do with why they think he wouldn’t turn.
