How to check an infants weight at home?

I calculated my baby’s weight by holding herbaby and standing on a bathroom scale. Write this number down; then stand on the scale without the baby. Subtract the first number from this number, and got my baby’s weight. What worries me is that this shows that she has lost weight. How acurate is this reading? Can it me of by a pound or so

When I do this it always seems to be off by a little bit. If you’re really worried though, your pediatrician should be willing to have you come in and weigh your little one.

It’s never very accurate at home, unless you have a special scale designed to weigh your baby.

My husband weighed our son(he was about 7 and a half months) at his work in the gym area. From that reading he weighed 22 lbs. I was in shock because at his 6 month appointment he had weighed 19 lbs. so he had gained 3 pounds in a month!

Not true. When we went in for his 8 month appointment he weighed 21 lbs. and still does at 9 months.

If you’re really concerned call up your daughter’s doctor and tell them. They’ll likely let you stop by and do a weight check on her.

In my experience, that method is not at all accurate. My daughter is 2 lbs heavier when I hold her on the scale than when my husband does, and both numbers are off by about a pound from the doctor’s scale. We have a digital scale that’s supposed to be accurate to 2 tenths of a pound as well. Your best bet is to buy an infant scale if you’re really worried – but you want to weigh your baby to get a starting weight and then monitor on that scale only from there on – all scales measure differently.

When i do this with my son it has been pretty accurate but i have stood on the scales twice and each time it has given me weights of a couple of pounds apart so i would get her weighed properly to see the outcome.

That’s the way I would do it. Double check your self maybe you stood on the scale differently or shifted your weight or something, of course if you don’t feel your baby is growing correctly contact the doctor. You could just bring her in for a weight check if you want to do it on their scales. Good Luck

I heard to do it that way too. That’s what I do but it doesn’t show ounces and I like exact weight. You can actually buy one of those scales like they have at a doctors office.

Throw him up in the air and if he hits the floor, he was too heavy to catch.

Its always off for my baby. I did that yesterday and it said my baby was 13 lbs and this morning at her well baby check she was 14 lbs 1 oz. So don’t go based on that.

Common bathroom scales can be off by up to 10lbs.

If you are concerned about your baby’s weight:
    1) Drop into your doctors office, a lactation clinic, a walk-in clinic, etc. Most will let you weigh your baby (or do it for you) without a fee and without making you wait
    2) rent or buy a baby scale (medela rents them)
    3) borrow or buy a digital fish scale, use a "sling" to weigh the baby (midwives do this)
