Is it ever healthy/normal for a baby to lose weight?

(Not just not gain, but actually lose weight)

I don’t know for sure that she lost weight, cause it was a different scale, but at the doctor at 6 months my daughter was 17 lbs, 5 oz. I just set her on my mom’s digital scale and it said 17 exactly.

Should I be concerned by that?
She is not due for another checkup until mid-June.

Thanks!
Oh, and she’ll be 8 months on Sunday.

Maybe the scale was just wrong, but that does concern me.

Well since it’s two different scales and the difference isnt that much I’d probably blame it on that… however it is NOT normal for a baby to lose weight.
How’s her eating been? If she’s 6 mos she must be on solids right? How much milk is she drinking? So check those things first and if you notice that she’s not eating well etc then you can consult with your doctor..

I wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve always found "at home" weigh ins aren’t as accurate as the doctors. Plus, did you have her in clothing at your mom’s? I know at the doctors Noah is usually naked for weigh ins.

Also, is she moving around more now? When Noah become more mobile his weight gain slowed down a lot. He was 21 lbs. for 4 months.

Weighing babies is a very inexact science. Aside from differences in scales, (‘adult’ scales tend to be quite inaccurate at low weights) the contents of baby’s belly, bladder and bowel can cause a difference of half a pound or more. And sure, some slight variation in actual weight might be seen — if she’s more active, or getting over a cold she might lose an ounce or two. Finally, she might have just had a growth spurt at he last check-up and be due for her next one soon. Between grwoth spurts babies may not gain much.

I wouldn’t worry about it. If she’s happy, healthy, eating well (mostly breastmilk/formula, with a little solid food), then she’s fine. It’s not a good idea to weigh babies too often because it DOES make moms anxious.

Call the doctor and tell them your concerns and they might say to bring her in and get her weighed to put your mind at ease.

No, a baby shouldn’t be less than she was 2 months ago. I agree with the others that home scales are much less accurate than the doc’s scale.

I wouldn’t trust the digital scale to be completely accurate. Just weigh yourself a few times in one day and you’ll probably notice your weight varies a few pounds within the same day and even a few ounces sometimes if you weigh yourself a few times in a row. I wouldn’t be concerned unless she doesn’t seem healthy or looks to you like she’s loosing weight.

You could also call your dr and ask if you can come in to weigh your baby if your still worried, some will allow you to in between appointments.

Hi, their is not alot in it so it could just be the scales if you are really worried though your doctors should have a baby clinic day that you can take your baby to at a certain time of day and get her weighed when you like i take my baby at least every 3 weeks just to make sure x

sometimes the scales are different…. 5oz is not much difference in scales and home scales tend to be less precise than dr scales….

heck on my dr.’s scale my son weighs 32 lbs… on my mom’s digital he weighs 29 lbs.. go figure

remember she is probalby crawling and eating solids now so she is burning more calories and probably getting a little less fat.. breastmilk and formula have more fats than veggies and fruits….

don’t worry unless your dr does

but like i said she is probalby moving now and getting into all sorts of trouble… hehe

I know once they start moving around more and especially when they start crawling and walking the weight will fall a little because of the increased activity of the baby. Also around 12 months of age the weight gain slows down. I know my daughter weighed 18 lbs 12 oz at 7 months and 18 lbs 5 oz last week at her recheck appt for her ears and these were both on the same scale. My dr told me that was so normal because I was concerned too.
