Small-scale baby shower = baby "sprinkle"? Anyone heard this?

One of my friends was recently invited to an event called a "baby sprinkle". It turns out this is a baby shower, but on a smaller and less expensive scale, because it’s the recipient’s second baby. Or something like that. :)

Has anyone ever heard of a "baby sprinkle" instead of a baby shower? Someone else said that this is better-known in California than elsewhere, but I’m a California native and have never heard of it! I dunno; maybe it’s just starting to get trendy? heh

If you’ve heard of this, please also tell me what state you live in. Thanks!

I live in Washington state and I have heard of it.
I run a baby shower website and get questions about it all of the time – so I think it is just catching on.

I think it is a great idea for 2nd or 3rd children. You may not need all of the things you needed for the first shower (ex: crib, highchair, carseat, etc.) so this is a scaled-down version.

Guests can bring smaller items such as clothes, books, toys.

"Sprinkles" also don’t have to be as elaborate with all of the decorations, favors, games, prizes, etc.

It is more common to hold them at a coffee shop or park.

NH- never heard of it, think it’s kinda silly- either have a baby shower or don’t.

I live in Georgia and it’s a common practice here to only have a shower with the first born child. However, may chose to give a sprinkle just to say good luck and we are thinking about you and here are a few things you might need.

I used to live in North Carolina, where I was a caterer for many functions, baby showers included.

There was a very few ‘baby sprinkles’, but when I asked someone about the strange name, she smiled and stated that it was something a baby website/magazine came up with to make low-income families feel a bit more special, especially with not being able to afford a bigger baby shower. It caught on very quickly, I’m seeing more and more of them now. I mean, how cute is it to say ‘baby sprinkle’ instead of ‘small baby shower’?

Sure have and your right. Shower but smaller. Give things that were not able to be saved from a previous child like nipples, diapers, wipes, maybe gender specific clothes if baby is different sex, you know like that.

    have fun

I have heard of it and I am in California as well. It’s popular and they are usually thrown for two reasons that I am aware of. 1.) Mom’s second or more baby. 2.) Smaller scale party for close family and friends, less expensive, shorter time… (a California staple). It’s just low key mainly because it is on the cheaper scale but it’s more intimate with close family and friends.

    Hope that helps!

I have never heard of this before but when I checked around the web, it looks like the consensus is a smaller shower for the 2nd or whatever baby

MI – I have heard of this. I think it’s a wonderful idea.

Never heard of it, but it sounds just like what baby showers used to be — a surprise for a mother-to-be, where she got -little- baby gifts. Part of the joke was that she was dragged over to the shower without expecting it, and was usually kind of a mess.

Virginia/Arizona–NEVER heard of it. But it sounds cute. I would still get a nice gift…baby #2 deserves just as nice as a gift as baby #2. Maybe just more stuff this time around (instead of a $40.00 bouncy seat….get a pack of disposable diapers, pack of receiving blankets and some car seat toys??)

My business is all about baby showers….and I have NEVER heard of a baby sprinkle. But I love the sound of it!!!

Baby sprinkles are becoming more and more popular. They call it a sprinkle because the idea is to "sprinkle" the baby with gifts instead of "showering" them with gifts. At a baby shower, the parents usually get any and everything they need for a baby from clothes, to diapers to furniture. At a baby sprinkle, there’s no need to buy a lot of that stuff because most parents re-use baby items. You should only buy things that have to be bought again-diapers, wipes, teethers, etc. I think it’s a really good idea.

I think it is a cute idea, for people that have more than one child. Women are most likely to want a baby shower, but dont need some of the norm new baby stuff bc they have other kids. This way you can still play all the little games, and what parent doesnt want free stuff for the new little bundle of joy that is going to cost a fortune LOL :)
