Under weight kitten??????
Just got a kitten from the vets, which his litter was surrendered. He’ll be exactly 9 weeks old tomorrow. He felt oddly light, but then again I am also only used to a heffa of a dog lol… so I put him on the digital scales, it didn’t register so I put him in a food weigher and it shuffled between 500-600grams. I then went online to check for weight charts and only found 2 (if you have any can you please pass on a link so I can keep record of his weight) they both said at 8-9 weeks old he should weigh at least 900g.
How under weight is he? if it helps, the vet nurses hand raised the litter from only days old so they didn’t get much from their mother at all.
Should I up his food intake? He was going to be fed 3-4 times a day of wet food (he has dry biscuits, but is eating around them) and also how many grams per serving or per day should I give him so he can gain the appropriate amount of weight?
This is probably the better pic…

The vets said he is a DSH. I just went and had a proper feel of his spine and ribs and they feel rather prominent, I’m not sure how normal that is in a kitten (its been a while since I’ve had one)
And Ana, thanks for that advice, I did start thinking his meals would need to increase.
About the dry food, thats what I would have thought too, but the vet fed the litter only dry food and they sent him home with a tub full, so I though I’d add some see if he’d eat id, but as I thought he chose the wet food over the dry.
I would have loved to get one of his litter mates, but as I rent and already have a dog and only had approval for one cat and one dog and I already think I might be pushing my limits a tad…. I sadly can’t.

i’ve always just fed my cats as much as they want. they know when they’re not hungry anymore. just, NO peanut butter. and, if it comes down to it, dry food is much more fattening for cats than wet food or fresh meat because of the high grain and sugar content in it. Any fat that comes from grains or vegetables is harder for cats to digest (because it’s not in their natural diet) so it puts more fat on them. I’m not sure it’s an entirely good thing – i suppose it’d be like us eating chocolate – but if you want to put weight on him, try that.
is there any way i can get a photo of the cat? it might not be that its unhealthy it might be the breed.
If you have a small bowl he’ll eat from, make sure every time he eats the bottom has to be filled with the wet food.
I think 3-4 times is too small. I fed my 2 month old puppy 5 times every day for the first 2 months and I still had trouble with her gaining the proper weight because she always was about a pound too light :S
My friend has a black kitten right now. He’s already 7 months old now and he still eats like a hundred times a day and stays slim. Cats are just like that.
I suggest you feed that kitten every hour or two the way I told you to do.
Also, try feeding it something from home, something that will fatten the kitten up, like peanut butter, meat, tuna fish, rice… I mean, I am an expert on that but in dogs, all I can say for sure is that your kitten is underweight. Ask the vet what you may cook for your kitten to gain more weight, do as I said, you won’t regret it
Good luck
his weight depends on his breed, or parents if breed is unknown. since i am assuming you know nothing about the parents, you could have the child of a Norwegian forest cat and a Maine coon cat, or a singapura and a Devon Rex. meaning, he could be underweight or over weight for his age, you have no way of knowing.
feed the little monster as much as he wants. he will burn it all off running up the curtains at 3 am anyway.
in a few months, you can reduce feedings if he gets fat.
he only just learned to eat solid food, his mouth probably isnt strong enough for the dry food. wet is better anyway.
also, you should consider adopting one of his siblings. cats are very social, two cats amuse and comfort each other.
Okay so i can give u a little bit of advice…sorry i cant give much advice but some….okay so i would try and get like a small eye dropper..and then go to like a local walmart… they have this formula designed for kittens… mix it up and use the eye droper and admister some to the kitten every couple of hours…it should help weight wise and stuff.
He looks healthy! Don’t stress. My kitten is roughly 6 months old and is the same size! I keep feeding him and feeding him! But who knows- maybe mine is a teacup cat. Good luck with your cat….he needs to eat meat so definitely feed him wet food on top of dry. He’ll eventually get bigger. My other kitten really grew at about 5-6 months, so perhaps they’re all different in terms of growing.
