What do you think of these Jewish baby names?

If I were Jewish, or if anyone in my family were Jewish, I would love to name my girls one of these names – I think they’re beautiful. Although, I do like some more than others.

Will you please rate them on a scale of 1-10, and comment on each one?

Would you choose any of them for your girls? Which do you like the best, and the least? Do any of these names have significance to you personally?

Devorah
Esther
Golda
Idit
Leah
Ora
Orli
Orna
Ruth
Sarai
Shoshanna
Tova
Tzivia
Becks, you’re right, of course: I certainly could name my children these names. But I know I would never be able to get to them. Even if I liked Idit better than Mary, I’d still use Mary first, because it honors so many people from my family, as well as my heritage. I have this funny thing… all my top names reflect my upbringing, beliefs, family, ancestors, or heritage. These Jewish names, while very beautiful, just don’t fit in with that. I wouldn’t have exhausted my family/heritage names until, like, my 20th child… so I just don’t think I’d be able to get to these!

You’re also right about not all Jewish families using these names. But that doesn’t make the names any less Jewish.

Pretty Mama – Idit is a form of Edith…I hope that helps guide your pronunciation!

Devorah 4: To me it looks like "devourer". Do you pronounce it like Deborah with a V, or some other way?

Esther 9: I love this name and had it on my list until my husband took it off for being "too Biblical". It does have special significance to me – it’s the name of my favorite teacher at school – who was Jewish, as a matter of fact. My favorite of these names.

Golda 7: I think this name is cute, and reminds me of all the medieval names based on the word for Gold. It reminds me a little too heavily of Golda Meir.

Idit 7: It looks cute, but how do you say it?

Leah 6: I know everyone adores this name, and it must be very lovely, and my favorite cousin is called Leah, but for some reason I can’t get enthusiastic about this name.

Ora 7: Nice sound, maybe a little too much like oral?

Orli 7: I think this is very cute, but it almost sounds like a boy’s name to me.

Orna 7: Like Ora, I love the way it sounds, but looks too much like "ornery" or even "horny".

Ruth 8: Beautiful classic name, lovely meaning, and such a lovely story to go with it. I think of this as a sibling name for David.

Sarai 8: Nice – a more interesting spin on Sarah.

Shoshanna 7: It’s pretty, but it sounds a bit …. um … ethnic.

    Tova 7: Nice and unusual.

Tzivia 3: I don’t like this at all – I’m not sure if I’m saying it right, but it doesn’t sound like a name to me. My least favorite of these names.

I honestly don’t care for any of them, but I guess my favorite is Devorah – I much prefer Deborah though – I LOVE the name Deborah!!! Ruth is okay – the nickname Ruthie is cute. And Leah is alright just very common and boring to me.

I like Leah, Ruth, and Tova. I knew girls with these names.
I also like Orli. I had a boss named Aurelie, different spelling, basically same pronounciation.
I also like Shoshanna, Ora, and Golda.

Definately do not like Idit, it is too close to Idiot. She would be teased at school.

    Devorah
Call her Dev. That’s cute :)
I also like Devyn. If you want to go for a more updated version :)

Devorah — 9 — I like this one because you can make some cute nicknames out of it. I’d use it.
Esther — 7 — I remember reading the story of Esther as a child. :) I see this name as an older woman, not so much as a child-friendly name.
    Golda — 6 — This name is okay. I wouldn’t use it though because I forsee the nickname Goldie…which I don’t like.
    Idit — 3 — I don’t like this name. Add an "o" and that’s why.
Leah — 9 — I like this name. It is pretty popular though.
    Ora — 5 — Just not a fave.
    Orli — 4 — Sounds more masculine.
    Orna — 5 — Again, just not a fave.
Ruth — 8 — Love the name, but it’s like Leah and used a lot.
    Sarai — 9 — Love it! I’d use it.
Shoshanna — 6 — I like it but I can see how it may be hard for some to pronounce.
    Tova — 7 — It’s nice. Different.
    Tzivia — 4 — Not my style.

LOL I’m Jewish and i have Sarah & Leah picked out. It’s funny that you mentioned Tzvia because my grandfather’s name is Tzvi. I’m going to use Tzvi for a boy’s middle names. I also know a Idit (she’s 15), Tova (one is 21 the other is 48), & Shoshana (she is 1). I also knew an Israeli girl named Noa (but she went by Shoshana). Noa, Shira, Maya, Agam, & Tamar are popular Israeli names.

I am Jewish, and I think you could use these names, whether your Jewish or not.

Some of these are very Jewish, and not all Jewish people would actually use these names.
