When did you put your baby in a toddler bed?

My baby is 10 months old and has been co-sleeping with us. We are planning on starting to put him in his own bed soon. But we do not have a crib yet. We are not sure if we ought to put him in a crib though since he is a little monkey and has climbed and scaled so many things that it surprises me so much. We are worried that he would try climbing out of crib.. and succeed and possibly fall and hurt himself.. so we think we will set the crib at the toddler bed setting. Is this to soon?

He was in his own crib @ 2mo in our room, and in his own room @8 mo.
If you want him to continue to sleep with you thats great, but if not now is the time to make a transition to his own bed. Keep crib at lowest setting. At 10 months it would be near impossible to get out of it. My son is 15 mo and is no where near escaping his crib yet.

I’m sure I’ll get thumbs down for this, but two of my children have transitioned to the toddler bed very early and very easily. My first son was about 16 months.

My daughter was around 15/16 months as well. When we put her in her crib, she’d lay down and pull the covers up all by herself, so we thought we’d give a toddler bed a try. Sure enough, she’s done great.

I always waited until they were walking good and were able to safely and easily get in/out of the bed on their own. That may be one thing you’ll want to consider. Also, is he a wiggle worm in his sleep? You may have to worry about him falling out several times during the night. I think its a personal decision though, so do what is right for you. Worse case scenario, the toddler bed isn’t working and you’ll need to turn it back into the crib. Good luck!

*Wow. No thumbs down. I’m surprised. Usually I get the evil eye when I tell people I put my kids in a toddler bed at 16 months. You guys just made my day! lol

It would be doubtful that he could climb out of a crib at 10 months, no matter how much he climbs. Cribs have settings where you can lower the mattress as the child gets older.

My daughter was in her own crib in her own room from week 1, and we switched from crib to toddler bed at 2. We just bought her a twin bed at 2 1/2.

In my opinion, he is too young for a toddler bed. They can fall out and get hurt, same with a crib at the low setting. I would put him in a crib but with the bars up higher, but be prepared for a couple of rough nights til he gets used to it. My kids were about a year and a half before they went into a toddler bed.

We transitioned our older daughter form her crib to a twin bed at 2 years. I plan on doing the same with the younger one. I never understood the necessity of having a toddler bed-it seems like an unecessary step but in your case, I see how it could be useful.

i would buy a convertible crib because he is still too young for a toddler bed and you don’t want to have to buy a crib now and in 5 months have to buy a toddler bed.

my son was in a toddler bed at 2 years old. we converted his crib into a toddler bed. at 4 years old we converted the toddler bed into a full sized bed.

My children were all around 18 months when they were in a bed. With a stairgate at their door incase they tried to walk downstairs and fell!! Not a problem except my middle child she cried every night for 30 mins for 3 nights but she got used to it. it was bunk beds made into single beds with a bed guard

No its not too soon. Our daughter went straight from the bassinet to the toddler bed and she had no problems. If hes a climber then he’ll climb out no matter what you do and the drop from the side of a toddler bed is a lot shorter than from the top of a crib railing. I have 3 kids and they have all done this at one time or another. No one got hurt but still scared the daylights outta me. Both our boys were climbers so I really understand your concern. Now I’m 26 weeks with #4 and trying to decide what to do for him.

I think you should get a crib. 10 months is a bit young for a bed and he would probably get more injured wandering around his room after getting out of a bed. He might climb out of the crib but probably less of a chance of that than him getting out of a bed.

There is actually a net tent you can get to put over the crib and keep him in. Check out OneStepAhead.com. It sounds mean but my friends had good success, until the child really does get bigger and could unzip it himself and climb out, but it should work for you child right now. (my sister apparently climbed out every night after 1 year old and mom ended up letting her sleep on the floor – she did not get hurt)

Just get an inexpensive crib, which meets the safety standards of today. You will not have it too long (unless you have more kids). I would not spend the $ on the crib that turns into a Toddler Bed for that reason as well. I think many of them can not be re-converted into a crib again. You have lots of other things to spend you $ on.

I will tell you that you are probably in for a few rough weeks for the transition. Try to institute a new bed time routine when you start the seperation. He is probably too young to get the change as an exciting thing so you will just need to be patient and strong. You might want to get a cushion for the floor and try laying down in the room with him until he goes to sleep and you get him to do this alone. This is going to be tough but you should really stick with it. You child will do fine once he gets used to it, and you all need some time together in your own bed!

FYI: My daughter stayed in her crib until she was 2.5 and we were expecting a new baby. We moved her to a big girl bed and made it a huge deal. It worked, but that is when we learned about kids getting up and coming into your room and scaring the "stuff" out of you by standing right next to your face until you opened your eyes!

At 10 months he is too small to get out of the crib. My son is 15months old and has not even tried climbing out of the bed. I put my daughter in a toddler bed when she was 2. I think you should wait until you see signs that he is ready for a toddler bed.
